About Me
My name is Lindsay McCullough and I recently graduated from Lakehead University, Orillia, where I studied my Honours of Interdisciplinary Studies (English & Psychology) and my Bachelor's Degree of Education. I cannot say that I was necessarily "born" a teacher; however, I believe that it is through the variety of experience that I have had in my lifetime that has made so passionate about teaching.
A long time ago, when I was eleven years old, I used to come spend the summertime with my Grandmother in Orillia, ON. I loved staying in Orillia for it was always so much fun to visit the beaches, go camping, and most importantly, eat my Grandmother's food (so delicious!). I also enjoyed volunteering at the Treasure Island Daycare, where my two younger cousins attended. I would go a couple days a week and help out with reading/writing, and with arts and crafts. I loved the feeling of being apart of a community and that I was helping young children, even though I was young myself.
After high school, I had an uncertain road ahead of me; I knew I wanted to help the community in some way, but I was not sure how I wanted to do it. I decided to apply to Social Service Worker Program at Georgian College, Orillia. During my time in the SSW program, I had the opportunity to meet many great people and acquire skills that proved to be valuable in the real world (counselling, applying for grant funding, behaviour recognition/management). However, it was through my placements that I realized that I truly have a passion for working specifically with children. My first placement took place the Orillia Native Women's Group, and my responsibilities included doing intake, participating in closing ceremonies, sitting in on sharing circles, and creating cultural crafts for the children. I loved working with the children and instantly I knew I had a dream that I wanted to pursure.
I began my journey of studying concurrent education shortly after and could not be happier about my decision. Since then, I have managed to be involved in the school community, volunteer for Big Brothers/Big Sisters as a school mentor, and teach English as a Second Language in Vietnam. As I embark on my journey as an educator, I hope to bring my passion and values to the classroom, which are to incorporate culture into the classroom, cross-curricular subjects, such as mathematics and literacy with the arts, and place emphasis on healthy bodies/healthy minds with a focus on mental health.
